Hello BMW owners,
I would like to make my customers aware of the following problem that may likely come up this winter which can cause serious engine damage if not dealt with properly. This potential problem ONLY applies to the following vehicles: 5 series model years 1999-2005 (6 cylinder engine), 3 series model years 1999-2005 (6 cylinder engine), X5 2001-2006 (6 cylinder engine), X3 2004-2005, Z4 thru 2005 (non-M). Moisture can accumulate in the engine oil separator and freeze. When this occurs, depending on the position of the internal valve of the vent system, it may either cause high crankcase pressures resulting in valve cover leakage and/or breakage or if it sticks open it can cause an engine hydro-lock condition which results in engine failure. This problem seems to occur in vehicles that make short trips that don’t allow the engine to burn off the moisture. If the oil is not changed every 5,000 miles, it can cause buildup in the vent system which will plug up the drain for the oil separator. BMW has developed an updated dipstick tube with less restriction and an insulated separator valve. Some of the symptoms may include some of the following: burning smell while driving, excessive oil consumption, honking noises when accelerating ,or even a check engine light. Below is a photo of some of the recent vehicles I have dealt with. Some moisture (white substance) under the oil cap is normal. If you experience any of the mentioned symptoms, get the vehicle home and turn it off. The harsh symptoms seem to be more predominant on X5 vehicles due to the increased length of the drain tube. If you have any concerns or questions, please feel free to email me.
